Emma Stibbon – Sea Change | The Rügen Cycle

BASTIAN is pleased to present Sea Change | The Rügen Cycle, the fourth solo exhibition by British artist Emma Stibbon at the gallery. At its centre is a new body of work developed following Stibbon’s research visit to the island of Rügen. In these works, she engages with the island’s landscape and its ongoing transformation through erosion, storm surges and climatic processes.

Taking as a point of departure sites that have entered our cultural memory through the paintings of Caspar David Friedrich, Stibbon turns her attention to Rügen’s present-day topography and fragility. In several of the watercolours, she uses chalk collected at the foot of the cliffs, allowing the landscape itself to become part of the image.
