Andy Warhol – Frühe Zeichnungen

A significant graphic highlight of the Marx Collection is its remarkable collection of early drawings by Andy Warhol, presented in a dedicated volume. An early body of work that is both surprising and engaging, while revealing the foundations of one of the most extraordinary artistic careers of the twentieth century. Created during the 1950s, the drawings embody the originality, and mastery that would establish Andy Warhol (1928–1987) as the defining father figure of Pop Art only a decade later. Available in its second edition, the volume brings together Warhol’s exuberantly colorful yet delicately poetic designs for gift wrap, Christmas and greeting cards, posters, record sleeves, advertising campaigns, and book jackets. It also features pages from his first self-published fairy tale, cookbook, and cat books, his prominent shoe portraits, and private drawings created for friends. The volume opens with a foreword by Heiner Bastian “Warhol before Warhol”—a new discovery even for those well acquainted with the artist’s work. This publication accompanies the exhibition Andy Warhol “The Early Work“ (May 1 to 24 Juli 2011), held at Villa Schöningen, Potsdam.
