Table of Contents

For the 2026 edition of Frieze Masters, BASTIAN brings together remarkable works of German, French and American artists spanning almost a century. We will exhibit Impressionists Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Max Liebermann, as well as Expressionist artists Gabriele Münter, Emil Nolde and Max Pechstein, in dialogue with post-war works of Pablo Picasso, A. R. Penck, Cy Twombly, Andy Warhol and Ulrich Erben.

Works by Renoir, Liebermann, Münter and Nolde reflect the artist’s perception of and engagement with nature in painting and watercolour: they depict the apparently untouched wilderness of nature as well as idyllic places in gardens and parks created by humans. In Twombly’s work, nature takes on different forms emerging from the material immediacy of a paper collage and the blurry fragmentation of his photographs.

The selection extends beyond landscape. While Warhol draws on the popular visual culture of the twentieth century and iconic consumer products, Picasso and Penck deal with the human body.
