The printed text is based on a speech, delivered on February 23 1986, at the Museum Abteiberg in Mönchengladbach during the opening of the exhibition ›Drawings‹ by Joseph Beuys. I would like to give my gratitude to the magazines ›du‹ and ›Interview‹ in New York, for their kind permission to reprint the text. For this publication, the speech has been extensively revised and expanded in a few passages. Joseph Beuys was my friend and teacher he changed my life like nobody else, because of him my life took a different course. The life and work of Joseph Beuys demand a farewell, which I know, this text cannot fulfill.
